Thanks for a very insightful and encouraging article. I am at a stage where I want to contribute to open-source software but don't know which one would best fit my niche. Since you were already using Lucene, it seems like a very logical step to contribute there. Do you have any advice for someone who doesn't have a natural first project they could contribute to?

Open source software is everywhere! I would keep a lookout for OSS dependencies in your day-to-day work and dig into any that catch your eye. Maybe you find a small improvement like an issue in the 'getting started' guide -- docs changes are still a great first contributions. Also if you've written a helpful script, small dev tool, extension, etc. to support your own work, you could open source it and become the one doing the code review :) Best of luck with your open source journey.
